Dr. William Liang, B.Sc, DMD, DABOI, DICOI, FAAID, FACD, FADI

Dr. William Liang attended the University of British Columbia and received his Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology in 1981 and his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 1983. At graduation, he was awarded the Canadian Oral and Maxillo-Facial Prize for highest standing in the area of Oral Surgery. He has been practicing dentistry in Surrey, BC for the past 35 years. Currently his practice is focused on adult restorative and implant dentistry. He is a past executive of the AAID Western District. Dr. Liang is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral Implantology/ Implant Dentistry, Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, Fellow and Diplomate of the International Congress of Oral Implantology, Fellow of the Misch Implant Institute and Honored Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

DR. PETER BALOGH, B.SC, DDS, FAAID, FICOI, DABOI

Dr. Peter Balogh received an Honours degree in Organic Chemistry at the University of Western Ontario in 1985, and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Toronto in 1989. His study, passion and vision for implant dentistry dates back to 1987: as the President of his study body, he sought out and organized lectures and courses in advanced dental implant education, and helped to initiate the faculty’s implementation of implants into the undergraduate curriculum. His clinical, surgical, and prosthetic experience with dental implants began in 1989 with a General Practice Residency at Toronto General Hospital, and since 1991 he has been in private practice in Burnaby, BC. He is a Fellow with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and a Board Certified Diplomate with the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry (ABOI). He is also affiliated with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) and Health Action Network (HANS). Dr. Balogh has lectured and provided surgical training to dentists, auxiliaries and denturists on the prosthetic and surgical placement of implants, and currently directs a large general practice in Burnaby, the Vancouver Centre for Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, where he specializes in implant, reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry.

DR. JAMES RUTKOWSKI, BSC, DMD, PH.D. IN PHARMACOLOGY

James L. Rutkowski D.M.D., PhD.is a Pharmacist, Dentist, and has a PhD. in Pharmacology.  He has authored multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and textbook chapters. Jim is also President/CEO of the Clarion Research Group  (CRG) in Clarion, PA.  CRG performs translational research for bone growth and salivary diagnostics.  Additionally, he is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral Implantology and a Diplomate/Past-President of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry (ABOI/ID).  He lectures nationally and internationally on pharmacology, sedation techniques, and bone grafting as it applies to the dental practice.

Dr. Rutkowski maintains a general dental practice in Clarion, Pennsylvania with a concentration on apprehensive/medically-compromised patients.  He utilizes oral, IM, inhalation and IV sedation techniques for patient management.

DR. CHARLES SHULER, DMD, PHD

Charles Shuler received his BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin, his DMD from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, his PhD in Pathology from the University of Chicago and his Oral Pathology specialty education at the University of Minnesota and the Royal Dental College of Copenhagen, Denmark. He was a member of the Oral Biology and Medicine-2 Study Section of the NIH.

His participation on the editorial boards of journals includes: the Journal of Oral Pathology, the Journal of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology; the International Journal of Oral Biology, the Journal of Dental Research, and the Journal of Periodontology. He has participated as a reviewer for several other journals including Cancer, Developmental Biology, Archives of Oral Biology and the International Journal of Developmental Biology.

Dr. Shuler has served in several capacities at the University of Southern California, most recently as Associate Dean, Student and Academic Affairs; as Director, Centre for Craniofacial Molecular Biology; as the George and Mary Lou Boone Professor of Craniofacial Molecular Biology; and as the Director of the Graduate Program in Craniofacial Biology.

Dr. Shuler has enjoyed an active research program as a faculty member for more than 22 years, based on his passion for scientific investigation of basic processes of craniofacial development. Currently his research interests include craniofacial development, oral carcinogenesis and gene therapy.

Mohamed Sharawy

DR. MOHAMED SHARAWY, B.D.S., PH.D.

Dr. Mohamed Sharawy received his bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honor (B.D.S.) in 1962 and oral surgery training in 1965 from Cairo University, School of Dentistry, Cairo, Egypt. He received his Ph.D. degree in Anatomical Sciences from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. in 1970. He is currently Professor and Director of Anatomy in the Department of Oral Biology and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Sharawy is Professor of Anatomy at the MCG School of Medicine and School of Graduate Studies. Dr. Sharawy is co-editor and contributor to Orban’s textbook of Oral Histology, author of the Companion of Applied Anatomy and contributor to several symposia and books of oral implantology and TMJ. He has published over one hundred and eighty research papers and made numerous presentations at national and international meetings.

DR. HILT TATUM, DDS, FAAID, DABOI

Dr. Tatum has more than 38 years of clinical and academic experience in Oral Implantology. He has led the development of contemporary dental implantology by originating and popularising procedures such as bone expansion (1970), autogenous bone grafting (1971), sinus lift (1974) and sinus graft (1975). He has pioneered predictable techniques for bone enhancement by a combination of bone expansion and closed interpositional segmental osteotomies thereby avoiding unpredictable onlay bone grafting techniques. His innovative approach avoids unnecessary complications related to bone grafting procedures and associated costs. He designed the first titanium root form system in the world to be given FDA marketing approval. In 2004, Dr. Tatum was awarded the insignia of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by Jacques Chirac, President of France, for his services to dentistry. Dr. Tatum’s involvement with the AAID and the Maxi Courses is well known and needs no further introduction.

DR. BERNEE DUNSON, DDS, FAAID, DABOI

Dr. Dunson was born in Albany, Georgia, and is a third generation graduate of Morehouse College. After completing his undergraduate studies with a degree in biology in 1987, he entered the dental program at the University of Southern California (USC), where he received a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1991. He then attended Columbia University’s general dentistry residency program at Harlem Hospital in New York. After completing the residency, Dr. Dunson returned to Georgia, and in 1992, he began practicing as an associate in Atlanta. At the same time, he served as a resident in the oral implantology residency program at Loma Linda University (LLU) in California, traveling to the West Coast one week out of each month for three years. The experience culminated in a graduate certificate from LLU in oral implantology in 1997.

Dr. Dunson is a sought after lecturer in the field of Restorative Implant Dentistry and has been on faculties for various continuing education and dental programs around the world as far reaching as India & Dubai.

DR. SHANKAR IYER, BSC, DDS, CAGS, DICOI, DABOI

Dr. Iyer graduated with honors from the New York University College of Dentistry and went on to pursue graduate studies in Prosthodontics from the same University. Currently, he holds two appointments in the departments of Periodontics and Prosthodontics at Rutgers’ University Dental School, New Jersey. Dr. Iyer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/Implant Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. He is the Director of the prestigious AAID Implant MaxiCourse® held in Asia with centers in India, Abu Dhabi. Dr. Iyer is a Past President of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

DR. SONIA LEZIY, DDS, DIPL PERIO, FCDS(BC), FRCD(C)

Dr. Sonia Leziy, periodontist, maintains a full time practice on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. She is a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia. She was awarded the Lucy Hobbs Award for mentorship in 2013, the Saul Schluger Award for excellence in teaching and education in 2014; she is recognized by Dentistry Today as a leader in continuing education. She is the implant section editor of the Journal Inside Dentistry, co-editor of the implant special edition for CCED (2019), a Straumann key opinion leader, is a member of numerous editorial boards, and is published in the areas of implant esthetics. She lectures extensively nationally and internationally, and provides hands-on education programs through Elatus Dental Bio-Architecture (www.elatus.ca).

DR. BILL HOLDEN, BSC, DDS, DICOI, DABOI

Dr. Bill Holden completed dental school at the University of Alberta in 1991.  After many years practicing general dentistry including implants, since 2007 he has limited his practice to full-time implant dentistry by referral.  His practice includes all aspects of implant dentistry including placement, restoration, associated grafting, teaching, research, maintenance, and complications/revisions.

In 2012 he and his partner, Dr. Ali Afshar, opened a dedicated implant centre in Edmonton, including an on-site laboratory.  Dr. Holden is a diplomate of both the ICOI and the ABOI.

Dr. Holden is also proud to have taken (and survived!) the Vancouver Maxicourse the very first year it was offered.

Paul Newitt

DR. PAUL NEWITT, B.SC, DMD, AFAAID

Dr. Newitt completed his Bachelors Degree from Simon Fraser University in 1988 and received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of British Columbia in 1993. He spent two years interning at the British Columbia Cancer Agency before moving onto private practice in Vancouver. Dr. Newitt has continued his education in dental technologies and advanced aesthetics over the last 15 years. In 2016 Dr. Newitt received his Associate Fellow credentials from the American Academy of Implant Dentistry. In addition to serving on faculty with us, he also founded and leads the BITE Club [Basic Implant Training & Education] in Vancouver, White Rock, and Victoria, for those dentists wishing to focus on implant restoration and not ready to commit to a large program like the MaxiCourse.
